An opticians in Swansea is showing that the traditional Saturday job is far from dead by giving young people the chance to learn new skills and kick-start their careers.
Figures show that almost one in eight of those aged 16-24 are not in education, employment or training, and the decline of the traditional Saturday job has been identified as one reason why young people aren’t ready for work.
However, the locally owned and run Specsavers Swansea store is committed to encouraging more youngsters into the world of work. The team employs Khadija Ali, 22, who has worked weekends at the store as an optical assistant for the past 18 months, alongside studying Optometry at Cardiff University. The role offers hands-on experience, helping to develop skills in customer service and retail, while providing an introduction to the wide range of further career and training opportunities available.
Ms Ali adds: ‘Working at Specsavers Swansea has accelerated my learning and helped me gain skills and understanding that support me throughout university. My university learning also helps me in my work at the store. The team is extremely supportive of my career and education, for example by offering flexible time off so I can focus during exams.
‘They have also given me opportunities while working, including my CLiP placement. The skills I’ve learnt are essential and transferable into university and will help me to develop my future career’.
Weekend roles for young people at Specsavers often involve greeting customers, supporting the team with appointments, and learning about the technology and processes involved in an eye examination. For many young people, it’s their first experience of the workplace, helping them to build confidence and learn valuable skills.
Specsavers Swansea store director, Mel Williams, says the team is committed to inspiring young people to explore optics as a possible career path. ‘A Saturday role offers a great introduction to the industry, allowing young people to gain practical, hands-on experience in a welcoming and supportive setting.
‘These roles are about far more than earning some extra income,’ adds Mel. ‘They help young people develop teamwork, communication and customer service skills that will benefit them throughout their working lives.
‘Many of our colleagues began their journey with us in weekend roles and have since progressed into fulfilling, long-term careers, which we’re extremely proud to see.’
Specsavers offers a wide range of career paths, from retail and customer service to clinical roles in optics. With ongoing training and development opportunities, the stores are committed to investing in their teams and helping people progress.
